Do's
Inspect thoroughly using a strong flashlight starting with the area closest to the bed. Check the tufts of the mattress. Look for blood spatters from the fecal droppings or for live insects. Check the frame after slowly lifting off the mattress. Check all cracks and crevices within 10 feet of the bed. This includes picture frames etc. If no insects are found and you still suspect bed bugs place sticky traps around the perimeter of your bed and place white sheets on the mattress. Check the sticky boards or glue traps the next morning as well as the white sheet for blood from squashed insects. Once they feed they get to be like a grape roll over on them and POP Check yourself. Bites are typically in a straight line and have a slight indentation in the center. It is common for two people to react differently. One person may be highly reactive while the other will show little effect. If you think you are getting bitten turn off the lights for 15-20 minutes then turn the lights back on and quickly inspect.
DON'T'S
DON'T PANIC Don't throw away your mattress. Don't inspect haphazardly. Go section by section and try not to overly disturb anything thus causing them to run and hide. Don't start using insecticides unless you have a plan of treatment and have been instructed in the proper method.
